Why would the Tribune publish

The Lee’s Summit Tribune

Why would the Tribune publish a letter from Greenwood’s new mayor on its front page? This man, since being in office for a month, has done more things wrong than any other Greenwood mayor has done in a month's time during the last twelve years.

His first move was to fire the Chief of Police and the codes enforcement officer.  He claimed that it was a money saving move to fire those police officers along with one of our two public works employees.  Another officer resigned after Megee became mayor. Now the mayor is asking people to volunteer to police our city and to do public works jobs without pay.  He would have untrained individuals riding with what is left of our police force.  An eight member police force was stretched to the limit and now there are four officers left while one is on leave.  This is probably revenge against officers who were only performing their duty to the city.

Following on the heels of that move, he held an unannounced meeting with a quorum of board members and the city staff.  This was a clear violation of the Missouri Sunshine Law.  Then, the mayor gave a pardon to an individual who had been convicted of vandalizing the former Mayor’s property.  That individual was found guilty in city and state courts when he lost his appeal in the state court in Independence.  Megee decided that he knew better than both Judges who found the man guilty.  He was fined and was to receive a jail term in June but our new mayor pardoned the fellow, and will return his money.  That is something that is allowed under state statutes that apply to fourth class cities where even a felon can run for and hold elected office.

We do not need to make harassment a crime in Greenwood, it already is.  The horse ordinance leaves open the possibility that a rider could claim that a driver of an automobile, that should have the right-of-way on city streets, could be charged with a crime under Megee’s proposed ordinance.  A few months ago, a neighbor of mine complained to me that a horse reared up and scared her so badly that she almost had a wreck.  Another fellow told me that horses chased his car down a city street.  Horses should not be on Greenwood streets or sidewalks period!
