Military Women Veterans Yesterday – Today - Tomorrow
By Maisie Rodenbaugh We have more than 300,000 women now serving on land, sea, air and on space missions. This began for women at the beginning of the Revolutionary War 1776 and has continued in every war since. There are legends that women had to disguise themselves as men to join any branch of the Military. The first woman to do this was said to be from Pennsylvania and served for 3 years before anyone found that she was a female. “If she volunteers to defend this nations rights then the nation should defend her right to volunteer for any military assignment“ There have been more women who have fought and died in Iraq than all wars since WW11. Lt. General Ann Dunwoody was announced by the Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates and nominated by President Bush in July-2008, to be the first female 4 Star General in American history. Tennessee was the first state to adopt a license plate to honor women veterans and it was made possible by a female Desert Storm Veteran, Laura Comas. In Washington D C some of the women senators have announced a bipartisan legislation to prepare the VA for the influx of women veterans who need access care in their facility in the coming years. This has been announced in 2009. There is very informing pamphlet available through the Department of Veterans Affairs, titled Women Veterans Health Care.
