Jackie Megee is a very driven little girl. She is eleven years old and a student at Greenwood Elementary. In her words, “I am the only 11 year old that owns a business in Greenwood and I am probably the only kid trying to collect 1,000,000 aluminum cans.”
Like many of us now days, Jackie struggles to understand what is going on with our government and the economy and just what is an ‘economic stimulus package’? So Jackie asked her dad and in tern received a very understandable example.
He told her that if a million kids each mailed one aluminum can to her, the Post Office would make money from the sale of stamps, helping postal workers keep their jobs. The Environment would be cleaner and recycling businesses would make more money selling aluminum, preventing lay offs in this industry. They then went on to discuss how she could make money doing this, save for college, donate to charities, help people.
This sounded right up Jackie’s alley. So she asked him how to get started. Jackie obtained her business license and was on her way. One of her goals is to get a can from each of the 50 states and as many foreign countries as possible. When you visit her web site, you can print an address label and view instructions for mailing your can.
Jackie is also a wise little girl with some advice for all of us. “I don't understand a lot of the things my parents talk about. They are talking about things they have never really talked about before. I think if kids do not understand something they should ask their mom and dad what something means. It does not matter to me whether someone voted for President Obama or not. It doesn't matter whether someone likes President Obama or not. To me, President Obama is America's President. I think we should let him try to do his best.
Some of Jackie’s favorite charities involve kids, of course, Greenwood Families Helping Families, a food pantry, because they help families get food and they help kids get school supplies. Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, because they help kids her age and St. Judes Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, because they help kids with cancer and terminal illnesses.
