Lee's Summit Prepares for More Snow
With the weather forecast as of 3 p.m. predicting snow to possibly blanket streets in Lee’s Summit on Friday morning, crews of the City’s Public Works Operations Department have already begun pre-treating streets with rock salt.
The most recent forecast for Lee’s Summit calls for anywhere from a dusting to three inches of snow beginning tomorrow morning (Friday, Jan. 29) about 6 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. Snow is expected to be lighter to the north and heavier to the south in the metropolitan area.
Typically, the City uses salt brine to place on the pavement before a winter storm arrives. However, due to cold temperatures, salt brine cannot be used to pre-treat roads because the water in the brine solution will freeze making streets slick upon application.
City crews will continue to spread rock salt on streets until ¾ inches of snow is on the ground. Once accumulations reach this level, crews will shift to a plow-and-treat operation utilizing all equipment typical of a Level 3 event, which refers to the use of all Public Works manpower and equipment.
The Public Works Operations Department will closely monitor the weather forecast and situations associated with the storm and will call in additional manpower and equipment, if necessary.
In the meantime, residents are asked to remember the following to help City crews with the snow plowing process:
• Remove all vehicles from streets to prevent a delay in clearing roadways.
• Shovel snow to the side of your driveway. This will lessen the amount of snow left at the entrance of your driveway by the snow plow.
• Keep fire hydrants visible and accessible in case of a fire emergency
It is also helpful to remember the City does not clear private streets, shopping areas, and certain private neighborhoods. Also, the City does not clear or remove windrows from in front of driveways and mailboxes.
