Lee’s Summit High School to host metro-area Academy Night for students and parents interested in U.S. Service Academies

February 9, 2010
Lee’s Summit High School will host a U.S. Service Academy Night from 7 to 9:30 p.m. March 2 at the school, 400 SE Blue Parkway. The event will be held in the school’s Lecture Hall, located on the west side of the building, next to the field house. The U.S. Service Academy Night is open to all students and parents throughout the metropolitan area.
Academy Night is for students from eighth through 11th grades and their parents. The event is designed for students and parents who are interested in learning more about appointments to U.S. Service Academies. Counselors and educators are also invited to learn more about service academy opportunities.
Those attending will hear representatives from the United States Naval Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, Merchant Marines, United States Military Academy at West Point, United States Coast Guard and Virginia Military Institute highlight their particular institutions. Students and parents will also be able to speak individually to the representatives before and after the meeting.
A special session will be held after the meeting for interested juniors and their parents. This session will focus on the application process.
Students receiving an appointment to a military academy are receiving a scholarship worth $250,000. All tuition, room and board is free. After graduation from the military academy, students incur an active duty military commitment of five years.
During the past 20 years, 40 Lee’s Summit graduates have received appointments to the U.S. Service Academies.
