House Fire, 1408 SW Longview Road, Lee's Summit
July 11, 2010 6:56 a.m.
By Jim Eden, Assistant Chief, LSFD
On Sunday, July 11, 2010, at 4:08 a.m., the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 1408 SW Longview Road. The occupant came home and discovered the house filled with smoke, and called 911.
When the fire department arrived, there was nothing visible from the outside of the single–story, single family, raised ranch house. Heavy smoke was visible inside the house through the windows. The occupant was out of the building.
Firefighters entered the structure and located a smoldering fire around a trash can under the basement stairs. Firefighters extinguished the remaining fire and checked for additional extension to the structure. The fire was out by 4:29 a.m..
The fire originated in a trash can under the basement stairs and spread through the open stairway to the hallway upstairs. The fire heavily damaged the area of the stairs and a portion of the upstairs hallway. Smoke and heat damaged the remainder of the house.
The cause of the fire in the trash can is under investigation.
